Holiday Greetings from our team and the latest Sterling News
I would like to formally recognize Carl W., a company Driver in Tulsa, OK for outstanding performance at Sterling.
One of the major challenges we face dealing with EOBRs (E-logs) is that just like any other electronic device, they have problems. In most circumstances, we can get to the Driver in the field to fix the problem and greatly reduce the amount of downtime the Driver has and get things working again. That isn’t really the case in Tulsa as they are a minimum of 6 hours from someone who can fix it. About a year ago, there was a problem with the cell modems of all of the EOBRs in Tulsa. The solution was to remove the computers and send them back to Chicago for the 10 minute fix and they would send them back. So I was facing a very expensive and time consuming trip to Tulsa for about 2 hours of actual work on our end. Carl suggested that he would remove the units and send them off to Rand (at his initial expense) and that I could fly out to reinstall the units and make sure everything went as planned. That in itself was a huge help, but it gets better…
I decided to go out over a weekend so that all of the trucks would be in one place and it wouldn’t interfere with the customer’s needs. I had arranged for another Driver to meet me and let me into the facility where they parked. Long story short, that Driver refused to come out and let me in because he was unhappy with how things were going at work. He later quit the following week. Without hesitation, Carl came out to help me at 6:30 on a Sunday evening just to make sure everything went on as planned.
In more recent times…
Carl is always extremely helpful with any computer issues we have out there and receives shipments at his house for our company trucks/Drivers as well as visiting Owner/Operators that are out there that need supplies. He is truly one of the best Drivers I have the privilege of working with. For those reasons, I think Carl should be recognized for his outstanding commitment to Sterling.

Vass, NC-SterlingTransport is continuing its commitment to being an environmentally pro active business. A few years ago, the company chose to join and participate in the SmartWay Transport Partnership. The partnership is an alliance between the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and the trucking industry. It was developed in order to help freight/trucking companies to reduce air pollution and green house gases. When air pollution is reduced, fuel efficiency is increased and the environment is less impacted.
The Smartway Partnership is one that the President of Sterling Transport,Hugh Hinton, Jr. is committed to. “Decreasing our carbon footprint and finding ways to save on fuel expenses is something that we consistently work at. Finding savings in better fuel efficiency helps our customers see savings too. That is important to us. Knowing that we are putting less stress on the environment is a big thing for us too”, says Hinton. The partnership with companies like Sterling Transport seems to be having an impact.
Since 2004, the efforts of the SmartWay Transport Partnership together with transportation companies, like Sterling Transport, have made a significant environmental impact. The program has concluded that in eight years, it has over 2800 partners in the program and has save over $6.1 billion dollars in fuel costs and saved 50 billion barrels of oil. According to the EPA, that is equivalent to taking three million cars off the roadways. The partners also helped to reduce 16, 500,000 tons of CO2. That number is staggering to think of. The program has also helped companies finance newer, cleaner and more fuel efficient trucks. Getting older, less efficient trucks off the highway is the key to lowering emissions.
Thanks to companies who partner with the SmartWay Partnership, our environment is experiencing less stress. Sterling Transport is proud to be a part of the solution and not the problem. Hinton commented, “We are one of the few independent transport carriers that are committed to this program. We wouldn’t think of doing things any other way. It helps us to save costs and that is real savings for our customers. We are constantly looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact.” This program is working for Sterling Transport. They are glad to be a part of making a cleaner environment for others and for their own families.
Things are looking a little different around here!
